Preparing for the Messiah - Day 5
Light in the Darkness
Isaiah 9:2 (KJV)
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”
Introduction
Isaiah spoke these words into a world drowning in uncertainty — a people surrounded by fear, oppression, and spiritual darkness. It was not a hopeful season. And yet, in that very darkness, God spoke of a great Light that would break through and change everything.
Isaiah wasn’t describing a temporary comfort or a flicker of optimism.
He was announcing a Savior —
the Light who would expose truth, dispel fear, guide God’s people, and bring life where hope had been fading.
This light is Jesus.
Reflection
Darkness can feel overwhelming.
Sometimes it looks like confusion.
Sometimes grief.
Sometimes waiting that feels too long.
Sometimes battles no one else sees.
But Scripture never denies the darkness — it simply declares that darkness will not win.
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.”
This is past tense.
God speaks of a future event with the certainty of something already accomplished.
Because when God promises light, it is as sure as the sunrise.
Jesus didn’t just bring light into the world —
He is the Light.
Where His presence is welcomed, darkness loses its power:
• fear fades
• clarity comes
• hope strengthens
• joy returns
• peace settles
Today, reflect on where His light has already broken through in your life — and where you need it to shine again.
You don’t have to chase it.
You only have to turn toward Him.
Just as dawn arrives without effort, His light reaches those who look His way.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You are the Light that shines in every shadow.
Where my heart feels heavy, shine Your truth.
Where my mind feels overwhelmed, shine Your peace.
Where my spirit feels tired, shine Your hope.
Guide me today by Your light and remind me that darkness cannot overcome You.
Amen.
Journal Prompt
What area of your life currently feels shadowed or unclear?
How has Jesus brought light into difficult seasons in the past?
What does it look like to turn toward His light today?

Last year, about this time actually, I felt my life force dwindling. Upon waking I felt exhausted and in so much pain. In December I actually told my supervisor I may need to quit teaching. I felt surrounded by darkness, but I’m so glad I held onto the Light of Jesus.
Along the way He kept encouraging me. I knew there was going to be purpose in my suffering. At the time I was unclear if it was through life or through death. Either way, holding tight to my Savior Jesus Christ was my comfort. May He be yours as well.
