Preparing for the Messiah - Day 37
Loved at Our Worst
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
“But God commendeth his love toward us,
in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.”
Introduction
Some verses stop us in our tracks.
Romans 5:8 is one of them.
It answers the deepest questions of the heart:
Does God really love me?
Even when I fail?
Even when I struggle?
Even when I mess up?
Even when I feel unworthy?
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
A thousand times yes.
God did not wait for us to be good,
clean,
strong,
obedient,
or spiritually “put together.”
He loved us at our worst
and gave us His best.
Reflection
“God commendeth His love toward us…”
To commend means to display, prove, or demonstrate.
Not in words alone,
but in action.
God didn’t just say He loved the world —
He proved it.
He showed it.
He revealed it.
He acted on it.
And His demonstration wasn’t subtle or symbolic.
It was sacrificial.
“While we were yet sinners…”
Not after improvement.
Not after repentance.
Not after we cleaned up our lives.
Not after we started seeking Him.
While we were still wandering.
Still resisting.
Still broken.
Still blind to our need.
Still turning away.
God loved us
first.
Fully.
Freely.
Before we ever responded.
“Christ died for us.”
The cross is not proof of our worthiness—
it is proof of His love.
Jesus didn’t die because we deserved it,
but because we desperately needed it.
His love is not fragile or conditional.
It is fierce, steady, and unstoppable.
This truth redirects our hearts:
You are not loved because you are perfect.
You are not loved because you earn it.
You are loved because God is love.
Today, let this settle deeply in your spirit:
You are loved on your best days
and your worst days.
Loved when you run toward Him
and loved when you stumble.
Loved before you knew Him
and loved now as His own.
There is no love like this.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for loving me at my worst,
for proving Your love through the cross,
and for meeting me with grace I could never earn.
Help me rest in the truth
that Your love is constant,
undeserved,
and unchanging.
Let this love shape my heart
and draw me closer to You each day.
Amen.
Journal Prompt
How does Romans 5:8 change the way you see God’s love?
Where do you still feel the need to “earn” God’s acceptance?
What would it look like to rest fully in the truth that you are loved right now, just as you are?

I know I can get caught in the trap of trying to earn Gods love.
I can’t. We can’t.
But we can thank Him, listen to Him, and try to show love to others so that they might get a glimmer of His love.
