Preparing for the Messiah - Day 24
Good Tidings of Great Joy
Luke 2:8–10 (KJV)
“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,
and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold,
I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people.”
Introduction
The first announcement of Jesus’ birth didn’t go to kings, priests, or rulers.
It went to shepherds — ordinary, unnoticed, covered in the dust of their fields.
While the world slept,
while the night stretched long and quiet,
heaven broke through the darkness
with a message wrapped in glory:
“Fear not… I bring you good tidings of great joy.”
The birth of Jesus is not just news.
It is good news —
news that brings joy deeper than circumstances
and hope brighter than the night sky.
Reflection
“Good tidings of great joy…”
These are not small words.
Not temporary cheer.
Not seasonal happiness.
This joy is great —
big enough to reach every burdened heart,
deep enough to fill every sorrowed soul,
strong enough to steady every weary spirit.
And it is for all people.
Not just the deserving.
Not just the religious.
Not just those who feel ready or worthy.
All.
The shepherds remind us that God loves to reveal Himself
to the humble,
the overlooked,
the busy,
the tired,
the working,
the ones who feel far from spectacular.
“The glory of the Lord shone round about them…”
The glory came into an ordinary field.
Right into the middle of their night shift.
God didn’t wait until they cleaned up,
woke up,
or got ready.
He stepped into where they already were.
He still does.
Where do you long for good news today?
Where does your heart need great joy?
Where do you need heaven to break through your “night”
and meet you in the middle of your ordinary?
The message that came to the shepherds
comes to you as well:
Fear not.
Joy has come.
Jesus is here.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for bringing good tidings of great joy into the world.
Shine Your light into my darkness,
and let Your presence fill me with hope today.
Calm my fears, lift my heart,
and remind me that Your joy is for me — right where I am.
Amen.
