Preparing for the Messiah - Day 20
Fear Not, Joseph
Matthew 1:18–21 (KJV)
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example,
was minded to put her away privily.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying,
Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife:
for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS:
for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Introduction
Joseph’s world was shaking.
Mary’s unexpected pregnancy placed him in an impossible position—
a collision of love, confusion, fear, and cultural pressure.
But before Joseph made a decision,
before he acted on his limited understanding,
God stepped in.
In a quiet dream,
God spoke the words Joseph needed more than anything:
“Fear not.”
God knew Joseph’s heart,
his character,
his sense of responsibility,
his hidden fears.
And God brought clarity where confusion lived.
Reflection
“Being a just man…”
Joseph was righteous long before an angel appeared.
He loved Mary.
He honored God.
He navigated his pain with compassion, not anger.
And when he didn’t know what to do,
he paused.
He “thought on these things.”
Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is pause
and give God room to speak.
“Fear not to take unto thee Mary…”
Joseph didn’t need more information—
he needed assurance.
When God calls us into something unexpected,
fear often follows.
Fear of misunderstanding.
Fear of what others will think.
Fear of the unknown.
Fear of getting it wrong.
But fear never has the final word with God.
Joseph is reminded that this story is bigger than him.
God is doing something divine,
and Joseph gets to be part of it—not through certainty,
but through obedience.
“For he shall save his people from their sins.”
The angel lifts Joseph’s eyes from his own confusion
to the greater purpose:
Jesus is coming to save.
To redeem.
To restore.
To break chains.
To rescue hearts.
And Joseph’s obedience plays a role in the unfolding of that salvation story.
Today, consider where God may be whispering
“Fear not”
into your own uncertainties.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for the example of Joseph—
faithful, steady, and obedient even when he didn’t understand the full picture.
Speak “fear not” over my heart today.
Quiet my anxieties, guide my decisions,
and help me trust that Your plans are always good,
always purposeful,
and always filled with love.
Amen.
