Preparing for the Messiah - Day 19
My Soul Magnifies the Lord
Luke 1:46–47 (KJV)
“And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.”
Introduction
Before Jesus was born,
before shepherds gathered,
before wise men traveled—
Mary worshiped.
Her first response after surrendering to God’s plan wasn’t fear or anxiety.
It was praise.
Mary’s song—often called The Magnificat—is the overflow of a heart fully trusting in God’s goodness and faithfulness. (Luke 1:46-55)
She magnified the Lord not because her circumstances were easy,
but because her God was worthy.
This moment teaches us something powerful:
Worship is not a reaction to comfort—
it is a response to who God is.
Reflection
“My soul doth magnify the Lord…”
To magnify means to make big—
not because God is small,
but because our awareness of Him often is.
When we magnify the Lord,
we choose to shift our focus
from our limitations
to His greatness,
from our worries
to His promises,
from our battles
to His strength.
Mary didn’t deny her situation—
she simply chose to rejoice in her Savior more than her uncertainties.
“And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.”
These are not the words of a woman with all the answers.
These are the words of a woman with deep trust.
She rejoiced in God—
not in clarity,
not in ease,
not in predictability.
Her joy came from knowing
that God was her Savior—
active, present, faithful.
Today, consider this:
What would shift in your heart if you magnified the Lord
instead of magnifying your fears?
What would change if you rejoiced in God
before you saw the outcome?
Mary’s worship was not the result of her circumstances—
it was the posture of her soul.
It can be ours too.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Teach my soul to magnify You.
Lift my eyes above what worries me
and fix them on Your goodness and faithfulness.
Let my spirit rejoice in You today—
not because everything is perfect,
but because You are my Savior,
and You are near.
Amen.
Journal Prompt
What worries or distractions tend to feel “bigger” than God in your heart?
How can you intentionally magnify the Lord today?
What has God done recently that causes your spirit to rejoice in Him?
