Preparing for the Messiah - Day 18
Be It Unto Me
Luke 1:38 (KJV)
“And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”
Introduction
After hearing the angel’s message—
a message that would change her life,
stretch her faith,
and position her in the center of God’s greatest story—
Mary speaks some of the most beautiful, surrendered words in all of Scripture:
“Be it unto me according to Thy word.”
She didn’t know the details.
She didn’t know the cost.
She didn’t know the path ahead.
But she knew God.
And that was enough.
Mary’s response shows us that obedience doesn’t always begin with understanding—
but with trust.
Reflection
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord…”
Mary begins with identity—
I am Yours.
Before she agrees to the assignment,
before she embraces the unknown,
she grounds herself in who she is to God:
a servant,
a daughter,
a vessel,
a willing heart.
Then she says the words that every follower of Jesus will wrestle with at some point:
“Be it unto me according to Thy word.”
This is not resignation—
it is holy surrender.
It is choosing God’s will above comfort.
It is trusting God’s heart above clarity.
It is saying yes… even when the outcome is unseen.
Mary teaches us that faith often looks like:
Saying yes before the details are revealed
Trusting God more than our feelings
Letting Him write the story, even when the plot shifts
Believing that His plans are better than our fears
Where is God inviting you to say something similar today?
Where is He whispering a calling, a change, a step, or a surrender?
Where is He asking for your willingness more than your explanation?
Mary’s yes changed the world.
Your yes might change your heart, your home, your future—
more than you realize.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Give me Mary’s courage to say,
“Be it unto me according to Thy word.”
Calm my fears, quiet my doubts,
and help me trust Your plans
even when I cannot see the full picture.
Make my heart willing, surrendered, and confident in Your love.
Amen.
Journal Prompt
Where is God inviting you to say “yes” even without full clarity?
What fears get in the way of complete surrender?
How might your willingness open the door for God to do something new?
