Preparing for the Messiah - Day 17
Overshadowed by His Power
Luke 1:34–35 (KJV)
“Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
And the angel answered and said unto her,
The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:
therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
Introduction
Mary’s question is deeply human and beautifully honest:
“How shall this be?”
She wasn’t doubting God’s promise.
She was simply acknowledging her own limitations—
her lack of ability, resources, or natural explanation.
And heaven’s response speaks to all of us:
“The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee…”
“…and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee.”
What God was calling Mary to do,
she could not do in her own strength.
But the Holy Spirit would accomplish it through her.
This same truth touches our lives today:
God never calls us to something He won’t also empower.
Reflection
“How shall this be?”
We ask it more often than we realize.
How will this prayer be answered?
How will this need be met?
How will this healing come?
How will this calling unfold?
How will this situation ever change?
Mary’s story teaches us something vital:
When we cannot see a way, God overshadows the impossibility.
The Holy Spirit does the work we cannot do.
The power of the Highest fills the places where we feel weak, unprepared, or unqualified.
“Overshadow” is a gentle word—
meaning to cover, protect, envelop, and empower.
It’s not forceful.
It’s not frightening.
It’s holy.
Today, consider the places where you feel like Mary—
aware of your limitations,
facing something bigger than yourself,
wondering How shall this be?
The answer is not in your ability,
but in His presence.
The Holy Spirit still overshadows:
• our fears
• our inadequacies
• our uncertainties
• our questions
• our impossibilities
Where God calls,
He also covers.
Prayer
Holy Spirit,
Thank You for overshadowing what I cannot accomplish on my own.
Where I feel weak, be my strength.
Where I feel unsure, be my peace.
Where I feel inadequate, be my power.
Do in me—and through me—what only You can do.
Amen.
Journal Prompt
Where in your life are you asking, “How shall this be?”
What would it look like to trust the Holy Spirit’s power over your own ability?
How have you seen God work in ways that felt beyond your strength?

This message could not have arrived at a better moment for me. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed, like I just can’t carry all the things on my plate. But reading this reminded me that when I’m walking in the work God has given me, He will make the path clear. So I pause, breathe, and release these worries into His hands, trusting the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do.
