Preparing for the Messiah - Day 16
His Name Shall Be Called JESUS
Luke 1:30–33 (KJV)
“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
Introduction
Before Jesus ever took His first breath in Bethlehem,
before shepherds heard angels sing,
before wise men searched for a rising star—
His name was spoken from heaven.
JESUS.
The name that carries salvation,
breaks chains,
calms storms,
heals hearts,
and brings hope to the world.
Gabriel’s words to Mary were not only a promise of birth,
but a declaration of identity, greatness, and eternal authority.
This child would be like no other.
He would be King.
He would be Savior.
He would be Son of the Highest.
Reflection
“Fear not… thou shalt call His name JESUS.”
Jesus.
A name meaning The Lord saves.
Mary’s calling began with comfort — “Fear not” —
followed by purpose — “thou shalt call His name Jesus.”
God still meets us this way:
comfort first,
calling second.
Gabriel reveals four truths about Jesus that anchor our faith:
1. “He shall be great.”
Not great like human greatness,
but eternally great —
full of mercy, power, truth, and love.
2. “He shall be called the Son of the Highest.”
Jesus is not simply sent by God —
He is God,
fully divine,
fully worthy of worship.
3. “The Lord God shall give unto Him the throne.”
Jesus’ reign is not symbolic.
He is the rightful King of the entire story of Scripture.
4. “His kingdom shall have no end.”
Empires fall.
Nations shift.
Leaders come and go.
But the kingdom of Jesus?
It is unshakable. Eternal. Victorious.
In a world of uncertainty,
this passage invites your heart to rest in the One whose throne is secure.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Your name is above every name.
Thank You for coming as Savior, King, and Son of the Highest.
Speak “fear not” over my heart today.
Let Your greatness steady me and Your kingdom reign in me.
Help me trust Your power, rest in Your presence,
and honor Your name in all I do.
Amen.
Journal Prompt
What comfort do you personally feel when you speak the name “Jesus”?
