How to Build the Habit of Reading Your Bible Daily (Without Overwhelm)
Week 4: Starting With Prayer, Not Performance
Before we read a single verse, there’s an invitation we often overlook.
Not to try harder.
Not to understand more.
But simply to pray first.
Prayer shifts Bible reading from a task into a meeting—one where God is already present and ready to speak.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach.” — James 1:5
Prayer Changes the Posture of the Heart
When we open Scripture without prayer, we can unknowingly approach it with pressure:
to understand everything
to feel something meaningful
to “do it right”
Prayer releases that burden.
It reminds us that we are not studying alone. We are being taught.
A Conversation, Not a Checklist
Starting with prayer invites God into the moment and quiets the noise we carry into the day.
A simple prayer is enough:
“Lord, meet me here.”
“Teach me what You want me to know today.”
“Help me listen.”
You don’t need the right words—only a willing heart.
A Simple Practice for This Week
Before reading anything, pause.
Place your hand on your Bible.
Take one deep breath.
Pray a short, honest prayer asking God to guide your time.
Then read slowly—without rushing to finish.
A Gentle Question to Reflect On
Am I approaching Scripture as something to accomplish—or Someone to meet?
Sit with that question. Let it settle before you write.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
Help me release performance and choose presence.
Teach me to begin with prayer and listen with humility.
Meet me here, just as I am.
Amen.
