There comes a point after the harvest when we have to decide what to do with what has been gathered.
Last month, as we walked through Harvesting Hope, we spent a lot of time thinking about planting, waiting, and trusting God with the growth. We were reminded that our responsibility is faithfulness. The growth belongs to God.
But lately, another question has been on my heart. What happens when God places something in our hands? What do we do with the things He has already given us?
That question became the beginning of our October Scripture Journey, Faithful With the Harvest.
What Does It Mean to Be Faithful With the Harvest?
When we hear the word harvest, we may immediately think about abundance or material provision, but that’s not what I mean by the harvest in this journey.
Our harvest includes the many things God has entrusted to our care. That can include our gifts and abilities, but it can also include our experiences, knowledge, relationships, homes, resources, opportunities, time, and even lessons learned during difficult seasons.
Some of those things may not feel particularly significant.
Maybe you’ve been doing something for so long that you don’t even recognize it as a skill anymore. Perhaps you’ve walked through an experience that gave you wisdom someone else now needs. Maybe you have a home where someone could be welcomed, a table where someone could be fed, or knowledge that could make another person’s burden a little lighter.
Biblical stewardship asks us to look at what God has placed in our hands and consider how we are using it.
Our Focus Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10
At the heart of Faithful With the Harvest is this instruction:
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” — 1 Peter 4:10 (ESV)
I love the movement within this verse.
We receive. We serve. We steward.
What we receive from God isn’t meant to make us compare ourselves with someone else or convince ourselves that what we have isn’t enough. Instead, Peter directs our attention outward: use what you have received to serve one another.
When we read the surrounding passage, we see that Peter is speaking to believers about living faithfully in light of Christ, loving one another earnestly, showing hospitality, and using the gifts God supplies for His glory.
That’s the kind of stewardship I want us to explore this month.
Stewardship Is About More Than Money
The word stewardship often makes us think immediately about finances. Certainly, Scripture has much to say about how we handle money and possessions, but biblical stewardship reaches much further. A steward manages something that belongs to someone else.
Psalm 24:1 reminds us: “The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.”
Instead of asking only, “What do I own?”, we begin asking: “What has God entrusted to my care?”
My time, abilities, home, resources, work, experiences, relationships, opportunities. Even the parts of my story I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen. When we begin seeing our lives through the lens of stewardship, ordinary things can take on new significance.
What If What You Already Have Is Useful to Someone Else?
This is the question I’ve been sitting with personally.
Sometimes we look ahead and ask God what He wants to give us next. Lately, though, I’ve found myself looking at what He’s already given me.
What have I learned? What can I do? What resources do I already have? What experiences has He allowed me to walk through? And perhaps most importantly: How could any of it be used for someone else’s good?
That doesn’t mean every skill must become a ministry, every spare room must be filled, or every opportunity placed before us is God’s direction.
Discernment matters.
That’s why this journey isn’t simply about doing more. It’s about bringing what we’ve been given before God and asking Him how He wants us to steward it.
There is a significant difference between saying, “Look at everything I can do,” and praying, “Lord, here is what You’ve entrusted to me. What would You have me do with it?”
What We’ll Explore During These 28 Days
Over four weeks, we’ll move through a progression that I hope helps us examine both what we’re holding and how we’re holding it.
🌾 Week 1: Recognizing the Harvest
Before we can faithfully steward what God has given us, we need to recognize it.
We’ll look at passages that remind us where our gifts, abilities, provision, and opportunities ultimately come from.
The question we’ll begin asking is: What has God already entrusted to me?
🌾 Week 2: Faithful Stewards
Once we recognize what we’ve been given, we’ll consider what Scripture teaches about caring for it faithfully.
Jesus spoke repeatedly about stewardship and faithfulness. We’ll examine what it means to be trustworthy with both large and seemingly small responsibilities.
This week asks: Am I being faithful with what is already in my hands?
🌾 Week 3: For the Good of Others
This may be the week I’m most looking forward to.
Scripture consistently turns our attention outward. We are called to serve, practice hospitality, care for people in need, bear one another’s burdens, and use what we’ve received to benefit others.
We’ll ask: How might something God has given me become a blessing to someone else?
The answer will look different for each of us.
For one person, it may involve opening her home. For another, sharing a professional skill. Someone else may have time to give, a meal to prepare, encouragement to offer, financial resources to share, or wisdom gained through experience.
We aren’t all entrusted with the same things. That’s part of the beauty of 1 Peter 4:10. Peter calls it “God’s varied grace.”
🌾 Week 4: Open Hands
Finally, we’ll place it all back before God.
We’ll spend this week considering direction, wisdom, surrender, generosity, and obedience. Recognizing an opportunity doesn’t automatically mean we’re called to pursue it. We can make plans. We can identify possibilities.
We can seek wise counsel, but ultimately, we want God to direct our steps. So our final question becomes: Lord, how do You want me to use what You’ve entrusted to me?
Faithfulness Doesn’t Always Mean Doing More
I think this is important enough to say plainly.
A Scripture Journey about stewardship could easily leave us looking for more things to add to already-full lives. That’s not the purpose of Faithful With the Harvest.
Sometimes faithful stewardship may mean saying yes. It may mean saying no. Sometimes God may ask us to use something differently, release something we’ve been holding onto, make room for another person, or faithfully continue doing something that doesn’t seem particularly significant.
The goal isn’t busyness. The goal is faithfulness.
You Don’t Need to Know What Comes Next
Perhaps you’re standing at a crossroads right now.
Maybe you’re considering a change in work, wondering how God might use your experience, thinking about serving in a new way, or sensing that something in your life is shifting.
You don’t have to arrive at Day 1 with an answer. I certainly don’t. That’s part of why I wanted to walk through these Scriptures. For 28 days, we’re simply going to bring what we have before God, spend time in His Word, and ask Him to help us see it rightly.
Not: How can I make more of what I have?
But: How can I faithfully use what God has entrusted to me?
